Many owners of homes in Lisbon and the Algarve live elsewhere for part or all of the year. Furnishing your home in Portugal from abroad with bespoke furniture is possible, as long as the process is organised so that you can approve every important step without being on site.
Can I order bespoke furniture for my Portuguese home from abroad?
Yes. What matters is that someone measures the space precisely, that you approve drawings and materials before production, and that delivery and installation are handled locally. A maker that does all of this itself gives you one point of contact.
Furnishing your home in Portugal from abroad, step by step
- First contact: send photos, a floor plan if you have one, and what you want to achieve.
- Site measurement: the maker visits the property. You can join by video call or give access through a neighbour, agent or property manager.
- Drawings: you receive technical drawings by email and discuss them on a call.
- Samples: drawings can be approved remotely, but material and finish samples cannot. Plan to see them in person, for example during a visit to Portugal.
- Approval: you approve the final drawings and quote in writing.
- Manufacturing and installation: the pieces are made, delivered and installed, with photos sent at the end.
Can I approve drawings and samples remotely?
Drawings, yes: they can be shared as PDF and reviewed on a video call. Samples, no: colours and textures need to be seen in person, because screens do not always show a lacquer or a fabric accurately.
Your rights when ordering at a distance
In the EU, the 14-day cooling-off period for distance purchases does not apply to goods made to order or clearly personalised (Your Europe). Bespoke furniture usually falls into this category, which is one more reason to approve drawings carefully before production. The legal guarantee still applies: 3 years for goods bought in Portugal (gov.pt).
